Wasabi Paddling Club

You will get wet on this ride....

Participation in the club is an amazing experience. Keep reading, this page will explain how to get started and what to expect.

Joining the club is as easy as showing up for practice. We'll have a paddle and a sporty PFD ready. In just a few minutes, you will be paddling under the bridge and past the submarine at OMSI. Imagine leaving downtown behind as you take in the sensational views of the river. Whether in the early evening or on a sunny weekend, the soothing sights and sounds of being on the water will overcome your senses. At the same time, paddling is an excellent and challenging workout. There is a powerful feeling of belonging and fun as the team paddles together. The strength of the boat mixes vitality and friendship for an experience you will never forget.

Most teams practice two or three times a week. Teams have varying goals from recreational workouts to competitive athletics. You'll be placed with a team that matches your goals. Most teams have a mix of new and experienced paddlers. The coaches are fantastic. You'll find the club having a supportive and welcoming attitude. Your level of participation is self-determined. The amount of time spent on the water is up to you.

Practices start at the Portland Boathouse. You may park your car at the Boathouse. The parking lot is at the end of SE Clay Street. (The east and south side of Hawthorne Bridge) If traveling westbound on Clay, the street terminates and becomes the Boathouse's parking lot. Here is a map to the Portland Boathouse. And here is where you should park. The entrance is on the back of the building (the river side). Look for the Wasabi banner. Our door is near the external stairs. Otherwise ask anyone buzzing around the building; everyone is super friendly.

Show up 30 minutes prior to practice. First time paddlers will receive basic technique and safety instructions before getting in the boat. Wear clothes that you would work out in, and don't mind getting wet. In the winter, make sure you wear clothes that will keep you warm when wet. Bring water to drink (you will sweat). Wasabi will provide a paddle and a PFD (personal flotation device, or life jacket). Members usually bring their own so there are always extras.

Were not going to charge you anything. Thats right, free, zip, zero. Your more than welcome to come and paddle. Come try a couple of workouts on the water. Chances are, you will quickly realize this is something that your willing to commit your time. At that point the Wasabi Paddling Club will ask for $35 for initiation and $160 per year.
